Arubaito!
From 2013, almost for a year in my first year of UG, I worked as a tutor for school students at Orange Kids for two hours on week days. I came across this job, on a day when me and my friend Thenmozhli, were loitering after missing the College bus. This was my first job, the first time, I earned. After receiving my first salary, I remember the joyous walk back home and I felt elated giving it all to my parents. I slept well that night, with immense pride that I have done my domestic duty with excellence. (LOL) I got amma a watch and few sarees.
From 18/6/2014 to 2022, I gave tuitions at home. The kids were a part of our family. Everyday I see them, interact and learn from them. The house used to be lively and super active. With lot of slippers at the entrance, it was a festive mood. The parents of the kids were like extended family, sharing sweets, wishing on occasions and so on.
Post UG, during my vacation, from May to June 2016 I taught English for state board students at National Lotus School, Redhills on weekdays. To recover myself from a personal trauma, my dear prof. Shanmuga Priya ma’am created that opportunity for me. That was the first time, I wore a saree and went to School to teach. I rejoiced the bus travel and that was the first time I could earn a handful of money.
From 23/11/2017 to 23/3/2018, I gave Home tution on weekdays for a grade VII student, from a reputed school at his home near Kallikuppam. So I was allotted a room, the kid will be on time, the hospitality was good. I remember after coming home, I will rush to his place and meet my kids back home. It was hectic but relishable. I found this opportunity via online. I remember funding myself for the college trips we had during our PG days.
From 10/12/2017 to 23/2/2018, I taught at Aanandham, Old age orphanage home at Kallikupam on weekends. They initiated a plan to educate the neighbouring kids, aid them in their language skills, they contacted our College. And VP ma’am of Soka Ikeda College, Dr. Meera Murugesh, forwarded my contact. It was a very peaceful environment and they give delicious food post the class. But I wasn’t able to continue because I enrolled for NET classes by then.
From July 2018 to August 2018, I taught for IELTS aspirants at Speak Easy, Ambattur on weekends. I came across this opportunity online, and I befriended many in the process. That was the first time I started to teach for people elder to me. I remember Ms.Jennifer, a dear one with lot of fondness.
From July - October 2018, July – October 2019 on alternate days in a week, I worked as a guest lecturer at TamilNadu Institute of Labor Studies, Triplicane. I taught I BLM (Bachelor of Labor Management) and I MLM (Master of Labor Management), Essentials of Language and Communication. After having my lunch, during my PhD days (am still pursuing) I used to walk from Presidency to TILS and sometimes my professors used to offer me a ride and post class I will walk to railway station and buy samosa in train, listen to songs and appa will come to station to pick me up. The students are in touch till date, they are very vibrant and all loving. I remember buying a phone for appa and salary will be credited to my account, which made me feel like a professional.
From July 2019 to September 2019, I taught for PGTRB students at Success Academy, Chromepet on weekends. It was a very professional space run by Government School teachers. The preparation for the classes will be taxing. My dear Prof. Sivakumar from Presidency College referred me to the academy. This is my favorite part, during the class hours, they will ask for the preference for lunch and always my option would be sambar rice. Once the two hour slot is over they will give the lunch, hot and tasty. I will savor every bit of it. It was a very different experience altogether, very ambitious and studious students who were housewives or teachers by professions. I got my sister a phone and they gave the salary at a hotel, after a sumptuous meal.
From October 2019, I took NET Classes at Professsor Academy, kodambakam, on Sundays, where I was a student myself. It is a terrific experience. I joined the academy as a student through my college bestie Hema, during my PG days. Later, I was asked to teach. I remember trembling out of fear, everytime I enter the class. I know the highly proficient students and the teachers there. My head whirled thinking that I have to share space with the eminent people like, Vasu sir and David sir. I am deeply debted to Saravanan sir, for such a huge opportunity, he was highly courageous and motivating. Academy is like a family, till date. I met many inspiring people there. through all these years, in all the ups and downs, they stood by me.
From January 2020, my full time profession of being an Assistant Professor started. I began my journey at DR.MGR Janaki College followed by GSS Jain College and at Mar Gregorious College at Chennai. Now at MVJ Engineering College.
During May 2021, I began my own Venture Speak Up!, a one on one communication enhancement classes for kids and adults. I successfully completed 3 batches.
All these commitments kept me going and boosted my confidence. As I retrospect, I am delighted at the enormity of the experiences I had, acquainting myself with different kinds of people.
